On 23 January 2016 the European Cloud Marketplace for Intelligent Mobility (ECIM) will start an app challenge whose aim is to make travel around Catalonia’s capital more enjoyable for citizens and visitors alike.  Barcelona is a popular destination not just with tourists but also major events like the Mobile World Congress, Smart City Expo and La Mercé festival, to name just three. Ensuring smooth travel experience is therefore a top priority for the city, and one which ECIM is well-placed to help achieve. “ECIM offers cities a platform for aggregating different mobility related services,” said ECIM project partner Javier Iglesias Gracia who has been responsible for organising the challenge. “Thanks to ECIM common APIs developers can access these services quickly and easily, which means they have more time to focus on what’s really important to them – building web or mobile applications that cities really need.”

The hackathon on 23 January will be the first of several stages that comprise the challenge. Its aim is to select three ideas or demos that best address the city’s mobility needs through the use of ECIM platform. The winners of this stage will receive a €1,000 cash prize each.

The second stage will involve using ESADE Business Incubator Programme to develop the selected ideas into working prototypes ready to hit the market. As in the previous stage, participants will need to pitch their proposals to a panel of judges. The latter will convene on 19 February 2016 to select a winner who will be rewarded with a €3,500 cash prize, an opportunity to attend 4YFN conference alongside ECIM team and, last but not least, access to co-working space and e-founders meetups at the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute for the duration of four months. Cash prizes worth €1,000 and €500 will be awarded to silver and bronze finalists, respectively.
